In the spring of 2010, Triskallian Tours and a group of students from a New Jersey private school traveled to Costa Rica to immerse themselves in volunteer projects and the culture of Playa Samara. Many of the student travelers were lacrosse players and brought lacrosse sticks with them as a means of introducing a sport they loved to the children of Samara.
In being one of the first groups to bring lacrosse to this area of Costa Rica, we had no idea what to expect. The response was unlike anything we ever could have imagined.
The children of Samara simply did not want to stop playing lacrosse and our travelers equally loved every minute spent teaching them the basic rules and fundamentals of the sport. It was out of this reaction that the idea for our Costa Rica Lacrosse and Service program was born.
Triskallian Tours "Lacrosse and Service" program represents a unique opportunity for lacrosse players of any skill level to work on their skills and simultaneously give back to the game in an inspiring, original setting. Our travelers split their time between practicing their lacrosse skills on different well-kept fields in the Costa Rican landscape, teaching the sport to hundreds of children in the local communities we visit, and taking advantage of the natural beauty of Costa Rica with various fun, adventurous outdoor activities.
As part of the lacrosse training component, our travelers receive hands-on instruction from the qualified lacrosse coaches who serve as guides on the program. We travel to various sport fields across the Nicoya Peninsula - some located directly on Costa Rica's scenic beaches and others cut into the lush rainforest - to give our travelers the opportunity to work on their game in this beautiful tropical country.
While not honing their own skills, our travelers work with a local nonprofit, CREAR, and become counselors and coaches themselves at the "Samara Lacrosse Camp." Hundreds of local children of differing ages participate in "soft lacrosse" on the fields of Samara. Our travelers work with the children on the mechanics of throwing, catching, ground balls, simple rules of the game and as the week progresses, live scrimmages.
Finally, during their time off from lacrosse related activities, our travelers enjoy their stay in Costa Rica with surfing, zip-lining, jungle treks and other activities that one can only find in this breathtaking, tropical setting.
